European and African research groups developing an effective vaccine against HIV/AIDS

AVIP (AIDS Vaccine Integrated Project) is a joint effort of European and African research groups to develop an effective vaccine against HIV/AIDS. The consortium will conduct phase I clinical trials in Europe to test new preventive and therapeutic HIV vaccines.

The AVIP mission is to develop novel preventive and therapeutic vaccines to be tested in phase I trials in Europe, that are suitable for later testing in phase II/III trials in Developing Countries; and to foster training, technology transfer and community involvement between the European Union and Developing Countries.

Nonstructural vaccine targets have proven to be safe and immunogenic in preclinical and clinical trials. Promising efficacy data have also been obtained in nonhuman primates, where immunity to nonstructural viral proteins provided or contributed to long-lasting protection against challenge with pathogenic SIV or SHIV strains.

Very Innovative AIDS Vaccine

The goal of the VIAV programme is to develop a novel, broadly effective HIV/AIDS vaccine based on HIV Tat and Env protein complexes. VIAV is built upon an international consortium of European experts in the fields of HIV/AIDS protein structure and molecular modelling/docking, biochemistry, molecular biology, virology, immunology, vaccine development, GMP production, trial conduction and field studies.
